Semaglutide

Overview

Semaglutide is the active ingredient. Ozempic and Rybelsus are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction in certain adults.

How It Works

It activates GLP-1 receptors, increasing glucose-dependent insulin release, slowing stomach emptying and reducing appetite.

The STEP and SELECT trial programs studied weight and cardiovascular outcomes; SUSTAIN studied type 2 diabetes.

Important Warnings

Boxed warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumors; not for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.
